The answer is definitely yes.
Because of the elliptical course of the earth around the sun and
the inclination of the axis of the earth, there is an important
difference between the “real” solar time and the average
solar time indicated by a watch that divides the time in minutes
of 60 seconds, whatever the day of the year it is.
Only watches with a “time equation” feature adjusted
according to the place of residence of the person wearing the watch,
and according to complicated astronomical calculations made in laboratory,
are able to indicate this difference.
The biggest gaps are recorded in mid-February, with more than 14
minutes and 24 seconds too fast, and in mid-November, with 16 minutes
and 21 seconds too slow.
The “real” time and the “average” time are
the same four times per year: on April 15, June 14, September 1
and December 24.
What characterizes the movement El Primero ?
Invented in 1969, it is the first mechanical, automatically winding
chronometric movement in history.
It has a precision of 1/10th of a second.
What is an analogical watch ?
It is a watch that indicates hours and minutes by means of traditional
hands.
If numbers are used, we call it a digital display.
Some watches use both kinds of display.
Why was the Reverso invented ?
Originally, the system was meant to protect the watch glass of
British officers while they were playing polo.
The patent for this “reversible” watch that glides into
its own bearer was registered in 1931.
Jacques–David LeCoultre and Edmond Jaeger then commercialized
this now famous model.
How do you write “IV” in roman figures: IV
or IIII ?
The “IV” is sometimes used but most often we see the
four parallel lines.
Two explanations can be provided:
1. It must be remembered that until the 14th century the normal
way to write it was IIII.
The first dial designers used this format to be as clear and understandable
as possible, since this is the way to count on fingers.
2. An aesthetic reason is also often presented; indeed, this allows
watchmakers to maintain the distribution of the dial in three parts
of four figures each: one in I, one in V and one in X. This graphic
balance is even stronger because the right and left parts both contain
14 elements.
At what moment of the day do we have to change the date
?
Anytime except when the hands are between 10 PM and 2 AM, because
this is when the automatic change takes place.
